SABINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - One man was seriously injured as a result of a two-vehicle accident involving a Hemphill ISD school bus early Thursday morning. Three of the children on the bus were taken to the doctor to be checked for injuries.
According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at apprximately 7:20 a.m. Thursday. A Hemphill ISD school bus driven by Simon Mitchell Beauchamp, 39, was headed east on Highway 21 when it stopped to pick up some students.
The bus was struck from behind by a 1999 Chevrolet driven by Roy Josepeh Harris, 18, of San Augustine.
Harris was pinned under the bus for a short period of time, Pearson said. Once he was freed from the wrecked truck, he was taken by ambulance to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. Beauchamp was not injured in the crash.
Pearson said the students on the bus were picked up and taken to school.
Harris was charged with failure to control speed.
"The report also indicated that Harris was possibly distracted at the time of the crash due to taking his eyes off the roadf to retrieve an item he had dropped within his vehicle," the press release stated.
