HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -

Authorities in Hopkins County are searching for an escaped inmate they say could be armed and dangerous.

Madisonville Police say 35-year-old Ricky Lee Miller walked away from the detention center around 10 Thursday night.

We're told Miller was part of a work detail that helps in the kitchen, and as he was taking out the garbage with five other inmates, he ran away.

The work detail was under the supervision of one deputy.  Jail officials say the deputy turned around and when the turned back, Miller was gone.

The deputy had to secure the five other inmates and couldn't chase after Miller.

Miller was sentenced in 2013 to seven years for stealing property from a nearby mine.

Jail officials say he probably would have been up for parole very soon, but obviously not now.

"Mr. Miller was never a problem inmate, had no inclination that he was going to do anything like this. He's never given us a problem.  Like I said, for three months he was a community service inmate working in the community.  No problems with whatsoever, good kitchen worker," said Joe Blue, Hopkins County Jail.

Blue says they are making major changes because of Miller's escape.

Now only two inmates will be allowed out at one time, they are going to add more lighting to the back of the building around the security cameras, and if inmates have a felony hold then they will not be working outside anymore.

If you have any information about Miller's whereabouts, call authorities immediately.
