TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The City of Tyler announced today that Mayor Barbara Bass received a special reward this weekend.

Mayor Bass received the Champion of Trees Award at the Arbor Day Foundation's 2014 National Awards Competition for her work with the Tyler Tree Initiative. The champion award is presented to a government official or employee for "demonstrating leadership in advancing forestry public policy at a community, state, or national level," Tyler officials said.

Back on April 30, 2010, Mayor Bass announced the "Tree Tyler Initiative," with the goal of planting 5,000 trees within five years' time. Certain species and locations are focused on each year under the initiative. Not only are the plantings done on public property, but also, citizens are encouraged to plant trees on their own property. The resulting plantings were were registered through the website, TreeTyler.com.

The Tyler Tree Initiative, city officials said, has become a major part of the City’s Tyler 1st Master Plan. They said that through this public process, it became evident that the Tyler citizens recognize the importance and value of trees to the community including, environmental affects, an increase in property value, and aesthetic impacts. In 2010, Tyler was awarded the designation as a Tree City USA and hired a full-time arborist.

The city says that as of Feb. 28, 2013, more than 5,500 trees had been planted in Tyler thanks to the efforts of Mayor Bass. There have been two city-wide planting events in which more than 550 volunteers from the Tyler community came together to plant approximately 1,000 trees in Tyler’s parks, medians and along our streets.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
