LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - For the past month, a Lufkin woman has been raising thousands of dollars through a rifle raffle to help a Point, Texas family recover from two rental house fires that claimed the lives of their two dogs, and destroyed everything they owned.
Point, Texas is about 2 hours north of Lufkin.
Kris Hightower says the community support has been so generous that she has even gotten furniture and clothes to give to the Droz family, which is made up of Lou and Christi and their children Tricia, 14, and Louis, 13.
In March, Hightower told the KTRE News that she wasn't looking for monetary donations, and just needed whatever she can for the family. The mother of that family, Christi, is battling stage two Breast Cancer and just recently had an emergency double mastectomy. She also just recently had an adverse reaction to Chemo, Hightower says.
The winner of the raffle is Robert Luce, who will receive his Duck Commander 22 with 500 rounds of Ammo on Monday night.
Hightower says she has known Lou Droz for years and says the family was planning on moving back to Lufkin, but through the donations, will hopefully be able to continue on with their plans.
Hightower says she also wants to thank Lone Star 4H and Custom Guns for sponsoring the raffle.
