Restaurant Report Card: Best Country Cooking

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

It's time to dish out a special edition of our Restaurant Report Card. This week, CBS46 has a round-up of the best country cooking spots in metro Atlanta that all scored "A's" on their health inspections.

In the south we call our country cooking "Meat and 3's". That means the price of your meal includes a main meat and three sides, that normally include some great country options like mac and cheese, collard greens, fried okra, tomato pie…the list can go on and on.

One of the best Meat and 3's is Rexall Grill at 3165 Buford Highway in Duluth. They've been in business for 45 years. The food is fresh and delicious, with staple items like baked ham, meatloaf and baked BBQ chicken. There are all of the great southern sides to choose from, as well as homemade cakes for desert. The other cool thing about Rexall Grill is that it is decked out in Coca-Cola memorabilia.

And here's a Restaurant Report Card inside secret: this is the spot I like to bring my family for good country cooking and I always order the meatloaf. It really is good.

In Atlanta, there are three outstanding country cooking places that many swear by and they are all in good standing with the health department.

Paschal's Restaurant at 180 Northside Drive is a soulful dining experience with a famous history. The restaurant opened 67 years ago and has served some of our nation's most influential civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Customers love the famous fried chicken made from an original 1947 recipe.

"It's like my grandma's cooking, you know what I'm saying?" said one happy patron.

Not far away The Colonnade Restaurant at 1879 Cheshire Bridge Road is another favorite that is always packed with customers. Colonnade opened their doors in 1927 and for nearly a century they've offered exceptional service, southern fried chicken, fresh fish, and fresh country vegetables.

Last, but certainly not least, Mary Mac's Tea Room at 224 Ponce De Leon Avenue in Midtown is legendary. Business people, celebrities, families and world travelers all dine at Mary Mac's and feel right at home. In fact, the Georgia House of Representatives introduced a resolution declaring Mary Mac's as ‘Atlanta's Dining Room.'

Click here if you'd like to find out how your favorite restaurant scored on its last health inspection.  Be sure to watch our Restaurant Report Card every Sunday at 11 p.m. on CBS46.
