TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A former Department of Public Safety Trooper pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated on Tuesday and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Joe Don Abernathy wrecked his patrol car in November 2012. Abernathy claimed the wreck happened because he was trying to avoid a deer, but a blood test revealed he had a blood-alcohol concentration of .16 - twice the legal limit.

Abernathy resigned the day after his wreck.
