LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Over the past year, illegal dumping has become a huge problem in Angelina County.
Last October and November, Angelina County Environmental Control Detective Donald Carroll told KTRE News that there had been 16 cases of illegal dumping.
"It could be rubbish from your household trash that's just thrown out in any location other than a designated location, or carcasses of animals," Carroll said in the report. "A lot of people this time of year are doing that. They're throwing their carcasses out, which is going to be illegal."
Throwing a bag weighing 10 pounds is considered a misdemeanor, which means a $2,000 fine and up to 6 months in jail.
For some, the amount of illegal dumping is a red flag. Members of the Angelina Beautiful Clean and the Angelina County Sheriff's Department have decided to team up to bring more awareness about illegal dumping.
They will be placing yellow signs all over the county that read "No Dumping or Littering." A creative sign that can hopefully prevent future eye sores.
"We purchased these signs so that they could be posted around the county so we can bring public awareness and so those people know that illegal dumping is a crime and it is a punishable crime," said Amanda Anderson, the executive director for Angelina Beautiful Clean.
Anderson adds that if you see someone participating in illegal dumping, or find trash in an illegal dumping area, call (936) 637-3668.
