LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A group called Open Carry Texas held a peaceful demonstration in Longview today at Loop 281 and Gilmer Rd.

The 16 individuals demonstrating were carrying "Don't Tread On Me" flags, as well as rifles, and were passing out leaflets. The leaflets were informational, answering questions about the legalities of carrying guns in our state.

The group's four stated purposes were:

1. Educate all Texans about their right to openly carry rifles, shotguns, and black powder revolvers in a safe manner.

2. Condition Texans to feels safe around law-abiding citizens that choose to open carry.

3. Encourage our elected officials to pass less restrictive open carry legislation.

4. Foster a cooperative relationship with local law enforcement with the furtherance of these goals with an eye towards preventing negative encounters.

Anthony LaDuke with the organization said that Open Carry Texas Smith County will have its first Open Carry Texas walk in front of On the Border Restaurant in Tyler at the intersection of Hwy 69 and Loop 323 on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
