Randolph-Clay's Acree to take over Lady Tornadoes

Posted: Updated:

Randolph-Clay's head girls basketball coach Jennifer Acree is leaving Cuthbert to take over at Monroe, pending school board approval.

"I'm happy for the opportunity to take a over a program with such a rich tradition," Acree says. "I've dreamt about coming home for a long time."

Acree led the Lady Red Devils to the 2014 A-Public state championship, and back-to-back title games.

"It's very tough to leave here," she admits.

The Lady Tornadoes return all but one player from an Elite Eight run in 2014. Acree says she know the talent her new players have, after going 1-3 against them in the last two seasons.

"They have a lot of talent, especially defensively," she says. "They're a team full of tremendous athletes.

Acree says she shared the news with the Randolph-Clay players today, and says she'll likely be emotional about the decision through the end of the year.

"Walking the halls and seeing their faces will be tough," she says. "But this decision is based on what's best for me and my daughter."

Acree says it's not just the success she's had at Randolph-Clay that makes leaving hard, but the potential for future success still in Cuthbert.

Randolph-Clay returns several players from the state title team, including star forwards Bri and Kobi Thornton.

"Whoever is blessed enough to take over this job truly has something special," she says.

She takes the Lady Tornado reins from Cheryl Cheeks, who resigned in March for personal reasons.

Monroe High principal Vinson Davis says the school received well over 30 applicants, and interviewed seven for the position.
