United Supermarkets defends arena name change

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Texas Tech University leaders announced a name change for the United Spirit Arena on Friday, part of a renewed naming rights agreement with United Supermarkets.

Many Lubbock residents were outraged by the decision.

"The word, United Spirit Arena, that brings everyone together," said Motola Peters, a Texas Tech student. "It makes us seem like a unified school."

Some Texas Tech students believe the student body should have had a say in the decision.

"As much as I know that they probably deserve it with the $10 million donation," said Texas Tech student William Dominguez "they definitely should think about what the students have in mind."

United Supermarkets CEO Robert Taylor says they made the decision to switch names after surveying freshman and sophomore students on Tech's campus.

"There were really more people that thought that United Airlines was the sponsor of the arena than United Supermarket," Taylor said. "We have kind of a generic name. It would kind of be like the American Airlines Arena, if they decided ‘Let's just call this America's Arena'. It just ties us to the arena. We're proud of our name."
