Warning for drivers: Weekend road restrictions in Phoenix

There are several road construction projects as well as major events going on within the Phoenix city limits that are causing restrictions for drivers this weekend.

The following restrictions were provided by the City of Phoenix Public Information Office.

BUCKEYE ROAD AT 11TH AVENUE Buckeye Road at 11th Avenue will be restricted to one lane in each direction from Saturday, May 3, to Wednesday, May 7, due to railway and street improvements between Maricopa Freeway (I-17) and Grant Street. This project is expected to be completed in June. Pedestrian, residential, and business access will be maintained. This work is being conducted jointly by the city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department and BNSF Railroad. Drivers are highly encouraged to use an alternate route or allow for additional travel time during this period.

BROADWAY ROAD AND 16TH STREET Broadway Road and 16th Street is partially restricted in each direction from Thursday, May 1, to Friday, May 16, due to sewer main improvements. This project is expected to be completed in May . Pedestrian, residential, and business access will be maintained. This work is being conducted by the city of Phoenix Water Services Department. Drivers are highly encouraged to use an alternate route or allow for additional travel time during this period.

BROADWAY ROAD - 15TH TO 24TH STREETS Broadway Road between 15th and 24th streets is restricted to one lane in each direction beginning on Thursday, May 1, due to sewer main improvements. This project is expected to be completed in December. Pedestrian, residential, and business access will be maintained. This work is being conducted by the city of Phoenix Water Services Department. Drivers are highly encouraged to use an alternate route or allow for additional travel time during this period.

MCDOWELL ROAD - 91ST TO 99TH AVENUES McDowell Road between 91st and 99th avenues is scheduled to be restricted on a 24-hour basis beginning 7 p.m. Friday, May 9,. until 5 a.m. Monday, May 12 . Westbound McDowell Road will be closed at 91st Avenue. Westbound through traffic will be detoured to Thomas Road. Eastbound McDowell Road through traffic will be maintained. Northbound Loop 101 on-ramp will be closed at McDowell Road. Traffic will be detoured to Thomas Road at 91st and 99th avenues for northbound Loop 101 access. Southbound Loop 101 off-ramp will be closed at McDowell Road. Pedestrian, bus stop and business access will be maintained. This is a city of Phoenix Water Services Department sanitary sewer relief project. The work will include the installation of flow monitoring equipment and a temporary sewer bypass. Drivers are encouraged to allow for additional travel time during this period.

NORTHERN AVENUE - 16th TO 18th STREETS Northern Avenue between 16th and 18th streets is currently restricted to one lane in each direction. This project is expected to be completed in May. Pedestrian, residential, and business access will be maintained. This is a CenturyLink priority service project. Drivers are highly encouraged to use an alternate route or allow for additional travel time during this period.

SPECIAL EVENTS: CINCO DE MAYO - SATURDAY, MAY 3, AND SUNDAY, MAY 4 This event will take place on Van Buren Street between Central Avenue and Fifth Street. The following streets will be closed to stage this event 7 p.m. Friday, May 2: · Van Buren Street - Central Avenue to Fifth Street · First Street - Monroe to Polk streets · Second Street - Monroe to Polk streets · Third Street - Taylor to Monroe streets Local traffic and access to parking facilities will be maintained. Police officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control. All streets will be open to normal traffic by 5:30 a.m. Monday, May 5. Drivers are highly encouraged to use an alternate route or allow for additional travel time during this period.

CINCO DE MAYO PARADE - 7 A.M. TO NOON SATURDAY, MAY 3 This event will be on Central Avenue between Alta Vista Road and Tamarisk Street. The following locations will be closed intermittently starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 3: Northbound lanes on Central Avenue - Alta Vista Road to Tamarisk Street Southern Avenue at Central Avenue Local streets will also be restricted and temporary no parking signs will be placed at various locations. Police officers will be provided to assist with traffic control. All streets will be open to normal traffic by noon on Saturday, May 3. Drivers are highly encouraged to use an alternate route or allow for additional travel time during this period.

D-BACKS RACE AGAINST CANCER - 7:30 A.M. SATURDAY, MAY 3 This race will start and finish on Jackson Street at Third Street. The following streets will be closed from 6 to 10 a.m.: · Jackson Street - Fourth Street to Fourth Avenue · Washington Street - First to 17th avenues · Jefferson Street - First to 19th avenues · Third Avenue - Jackson to Adams streets Police will be on-site to assist with traffic control. All streets will be open to normal traffic by 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3. Drivers are encouraged to use caution when driving through this area.

REOPENING AFTER RESTRICTIONS: JEFFERSON STREET - FIRST TO THIRD AVENUES Jefferson Street between First and Third avenues is scheduled to be open to normal traffic on Friday, May 2, following the completion of a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department project.

PEORIA AVENUE - 24TH TO 25TH AVENUES Peoria Avenue between 24th and 25th avenues at the Cave Creek Wash Bridge is now open to normal traffic following a City of Phoenix bridge rehabilitation project.

THIRD AVENUE - MADISON TO JEFFERSON STREETS Third Avenue between Madison and Jefferson streets is scheduled to be open to normal traffic on Friday, May 2, following the completion of a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department project for storm drain work.

19TH AVENUE - WASHINGTON TO ADAMS STREETS 19th Avenue between Washington and Adams streets is now open to normal traffic following work for a city of Phoenix storm drain installation.

CONTINUING RESTRICTIONS: Broadway Road "Avenida Rio Salado" - Central to 15th avenues is partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement project to provide "connectivity" to the west valley, with completion scheduled for May. During the "Avenida Rio Salado" project, Broadway Road will be restricted between Seventh Street and 51st Avenue. · Bethany Home Road - 31st to 35th avenues, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement project to provide a water main replacement and residential water services, with completion scheduled for May. · Greenway Parkway between Seventh and 19th avenues, full closure due to the demolition and construction of the Cave Creek Wash Bridge located on Greenway Parkway between 14th Avenue and 17th Drive, with completion scheduled for September. · Jefferson Street - 1st to 3rd avenues, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department project for storm drain work, with completion scheduled for April. · Lower Buckeye Road - 43rd to 51st avenues, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement project widening Lower Buckeye Road, with completion scheduled for December.. · McDowell Road - 12th to 16th streets, partial restriction due to a City of Phoenix, Street Transportation Department capital improvement project for a new water main, completion scheduled for June. · Osborn Road - 20th to 22nd streets, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement project for a new storm water main, with completion scheduled for June. · Van Buren and 28th Street intersection, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement project for a storm water main replacement, with completion scheduled for June. · 7th Street - Roosevelt Street to Thomas Road, partial restriction due to an Arizona Public Service infrastructure improvement project, completion scheduled for May. · 19th Avenue - Pima to Grant streets, partial restriction due to a Southwest Gas pipeline replacement improvement project, with completion scheduled for June. · 19th Avenue - Grand Avenue and McDowell Road intersection, partial restriction due to an Arizona Department of Transportation $12.7 million improvement project of US 60 (Grand Avenue). The project will include pavement improvements, road construction, and new right turn lanes and sidewalks at various locations. New lighting, landscape, screen walls, and fencing will be included in the project, with completion scheduled for April. Also, 19th Avenue - Monte Vista Road to Culver Street, partial restriction due to an Arizona Department of Transportation $12.7 million improvement project of US 60 (Grand Avenue), with completion scheduled for April. · 19th Avenue - Wood Drive and Cactus Road, partial restriction due to a Southwest Gas 12" natural gas line replacement project, with scheduled completion for April. · 24th Street - McDowell to Thomas roads, partial restriction due to a Southwest Gas Corporation infrastructure improvement project, with completion scheduled for May. · 24th Street - Broadway Road to Jones Avenue, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement storm drain project, with scheduled completion for June. · 35th Avenue - Bethany Home Road to Missouri Avenue, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Street Transportation Department capital improvement project to provide water main replacement and residential water services, with completion scheduled for May. · 43rd Avenue - Lower Buckeye Road to Buckeye Road, partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix, Street Transportation Department capital improvement project widening of Lower Buckeye Road & 43rd Avenue, with completion scheduled for December. · 67th Avenue - Adams and Grant streets partial restriction due to a city of Phoenix Water Department contractor repairing a large diameter water transmission main, with completion scheduled for May. · Northwest light rail extension - Ongoing restrictions along 19th Avenue and cross streets related to light rail northwest extension construction. 19th Avenue between Bethany Home Road to Dunlap Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction for utility relocation.
