LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

For the Rough family, every day is May day.

They still remember the night in December of 2012 when 19-year-old Meagan "May" Rough was killed by a drunk driver.

Though May was wearing her seatbelt, she was thrown from the car when 19-year-old Jason White plowed over the car she was riding in at more than 100 miles per hour.

Her name now represents a foundation dedicated to the fight against intoxicated and chemically impaired driving, and it's the inspiration behind the 2nd annual MAYDAY5KGLOW run/walk around the Texas Tech campus.

The race begins on Glenna Goodacre Blvd, where May's life ended a year and a half ago.

Her family and friends came from across the state to be there in honor of May, including her parents, who traveled nearly seven hours from Kaufman.

"She loved to add color and she loved the night life. She loved her friends," said May's mom, Kari.

One of those friends, Caleb Crawford, came from College Station, where the MAYDAY5K has taken off.

"I've been around Meagan my whole life, one of my absolute best friends. She was just such a shining star," Caleb said.

Bright t-shirts, glow sticks and neon balloons lit up the night, illuminating the true meaning behind the 5K run.

"It really ties down to Meagan and her personality. Because she glowed, she really did," Kari said.

Loved ones gathered to honor May's bright spirit.

Dana Lipinsky watched May grow up and says her destiny was as big as it gets.

"May was so much bigger than life. As we are all seeing as this (race) goes, she was even bigger than Texas Tech." Lipinsky says.

Dozens of people, with one united vision, to spread a single message, with May's parents behind it all.

"We want to get the message out that it's so important not to drink and drive," Kari said.
