More champs crowned on day two of girls' state meet

Posted: Updated:

South Georgia athletes put together several more place-worthy performances at day two of the GHSA girls' state track meet.

Friday featured field event finals for Classes A, AAAAA, and AAAAAA.

One of the main attractions was the AAAAAA pole vault, where Tift County's Katie Utley came up just short in her bid for a fourth consecutive state title.

Utley and Kennesaw Mountain's Shelby Smith each failed to clear 12'6", but Smith claimed the title on fewer attempts to clear 12 feet. Smith leapt over on her first attempt, while Utley cleared on her third.

Baconton Charter's Kimmie Davis outjumped the competition in the A-Public Long Jump for a state title.

Davis leapt 17' 2.25" to claim the championship.

  • Tift County's Staceyanna Murrell earned third place in the AAAAAA shot put and discus events.
  • Lee County's Madison Daniel finished fourth in the AAAAA pole vault.
  • Thomas Co. Central's Bryana Scott took third place in the AAAAA discus.
  • Turner County's Keyanna Dawson finished third in the A Public Long Jump

All classes will hold the running event finals for all classes on Saturday.
