A man who fled after being shot by police outside Phoenix Children's Hospital on early Saturday morning is in custody.

Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said officers were called to the hospital at 20th Street and Thomas by hospital staff at about 3:30 a.m. for a trespassing call.

They requested officers remove a man, later identified as Salvador Ramirez, 24, who had been reportedly throwing rocks and drinking on hospital property.

Ramirez returned shortly after each time, ultimately provoking the security guards with profanity while holding a bottle in a threatening manner, Martos said.

Martos said when officers arrived, Ramirez ran into some nearby shrubs. As officers searched the area, the man jumped at an officer from the bushes, said Martos.

The officer, believing Ramirez had something in his hand, fired at the man, hitting him in the leg, said Martos.

In spite of his injury, the suspect ran away.

After a brief search of the area, he was found nearby and taken to a hospital for his injury, said Martos.

After he was released from the hospital, Ramirez was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and trespassing.
