LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

It is National Nurses' Week, and Memorial Medical Center in Lufkin kicked off the week of recognition with a ceremony speaking to the important roles nurses play in healthcare and society.

"Leading the way in the field of nursing" is this year's theme.

Memorial Hospital's leadership each took turns praising their nurses and the essential role they play in patient care.

We are constantly being challenged with being creative and being innovative and thinking of the different ways that nurses lead the way in how we provide healthcare services in our community," said Memorial Hospital COO, Peggy Mortensen.

Memorial Health Systems President & CEO, Gary Looper said, "You, our nursing staff, our clinical staff are right up front in leading us into this reformed industry."

The Memorial Hospital chaplain blessed the hands of all the nursing staff so that they may continue to use their gifts to heal.
