The Chireno Owls are headed to state for track and field.
Brooklen Butler, a sophomore at Chireno, will be competing in the 300 meter hurdles this weekend in the state meet at UT Austin.
She has managed to sweep her competition along the way, winning district and then regional's.
Her personal record is 50.27 seconds and it certainly has proven to be fast enough to punch herself a ticket to Austin.
"It's exciting. I'll never forget the moment when I crossed the finish line at regional's. I collapsed because I couldn't believe it. I had completed my goal and I was going to state as the champion of regional's," said Butler. "I know it's going to be difficult. I know the top 4 or 5 girls are separated by like 10ths of a second. I know it's going to be a major challenge, but I'm ready for the challenge."
Butler won't be heading alone as Justice Lockett has also qualified for state in shot put.
She won district after throwing for 39.7 meters and then placed 2nd at regional's.
Lockett says with the help of her coach, she has a goal that's she's confident she will reach at state.
"Coach Zienko has pushed me really hard this year and I really haven't had a coach that's pushed me as hard as she has. She's like, 'Justice go out there and do it,' and I got out there and do it," said Lockett. "My goal has been 40meters this year and I've come close, but I haven't got there. She set that goal for me at the beginning of the season and I haven't got there, but state is where I'm going to get there."
Their Coach believes they both have what it takes to do great things at the state meet.
"Brooklen, whenever she is out there competing, she is out there to do better than she did the time before. It's her against herself," said Crystal Zienko, the head track coach at Chireno. "Justice, she just goes out and I tell her to do her thing and she does it."
The girls are leaving Thursday night and will compete on Saturday at UT Austin.
