BUTTE, AK (KLTV) -

An East Texas soldier stationed in Alaska died Saturday after a rollover accident.

According to the U.S. Army, Specialist Shawn N. Bounds, 23, of Tyler was involved in an accident in the Knik River public use area near Butte, Alaska. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from injuries sustained during the crash.

Bounds was serving as an Alaskan paratrooper at the time of his death. He was a fire support specialist assigned to the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

Bounds joined the Army in May 2011 after completing basic combat training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He reported to Alaska in October 2011.

In December 2011, Bounds deployed to Afghanistan. He returned to Alaska in September 2012.

The accident is being investigated by Alaska State Troopers.

Shawn's father, Mark, said it was Shawn's dream to serve in the armed forces.

“He had a deep, deep desire to serve his country. His dream and his love was to go into the army since he was six years old,” said Mark.

Shawn's parents say his fierce desire to serve his country was eclipsed by the love he had in his heart for his family.

Mark said, “He was very loving. [He] loved his mother dearly. [He] loved his sisters unconditionally. [He was] very close to both his sisters.”

Although Shawn may be gone from this world, his parents say they know exactly where he is.

“He's still alive. He's in heaven… He was awesome. He is an awesome young man and the joy of our life and he'll be very much missed,” said Mark.
