First Student employees plan demonstration for fair contracts

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

First Student bus drivers, monitors and mechanics are continuing their fight for a fair contract.

On Tuesday, the group was preparing their signs for a demonstration planned for Wednesday outside of the First Student main office.

About 500 employees are expected to lose their unemployment benefits next summer after Georgia lawmakers passed legislation to cut back on costs.

Now that those workers won't be able to collect summertime unemployment, they're calling for First Student to compensate them during the summer months instead.

"That's our concern there, that wherever we go, if First Student doesn't come to a solution with us drivers, then they are going to lose a lot of professional, good drivers," said bus driver Edith Dunlap.

The demonstration is planned for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. outside of the First Student main office.
