Copper thieves target Toledo Public Schools building

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools became the victim of a burglary and vandalism early Wednesday morning.

The incidents happened at the old Riverside Hospital, 1600 N Superior Street, a building purchased by the school system. It is expected to be the site of the new TPS headquarters.

Toledo Police say an interior alarm went off inside the building around 2 a.m., which lead security to check on the facility.

Police arrived shortly after, checking room-by-room. Officers located and arrested the following suspects:

Alejandro Herrera, 22

Jerardo Herrera, 21

Anthony Hill, 19

Brandon Scott Hoyt, 31

Tyrone Johnson, 20

Devon Eugene Jones, 23

David A Smith Jr, 19

Ryan Benjamin Wilder, 19

Upon searching the building further, officers say they located seven backpacks full of cut copper piping in the hallway. A pipe cutting tool fell out of Jones' pocket during handcuffing, according to police.

All eight of the suspects will face Breaking and Entering charges. Jones will face an additional charge of Possessing Criminal Tools.

While searching inside, police heard the sound of glass breaking on the Summit Street side of the building. Officers located three other individuals: Randy Allen Smith, 19, Nicole Lee Curtis, 19, and Teshaun Morris, 19.

The trio told officers they were breaking glass bottles outside the building, but they did not attempt to get inside.

All three individuals were charged with trespassing. Police do not believe the two groups are linked.

The copper stripped from inside the building will be returned to Toledo Public Schools.

Toledo Police say it is important for both businesses and homeowners to protect their vacant properties against copper theft. "Buildings that are vacant and appear to be vacant are targets of people that try to 'house strip,'" said Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "We always recommend, if you do have a building that is not in use, do everything you can to try and make it look like people are coming and going there."
