NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

School is wrapping up for all grade levels, but some Nacogdoches elementary children are receiving a "sneak peek" of next year. Raguet Elementary is trying something new called "Promotion Day."

The first day of school jitters will be reduced for these soon to be first graders.

Today they're already meeting their first-grade teacher, first-grade friends and even doing first-grade work.

The promotion day concept gives students and teachers a head start.

"We are not spending a lot of time testing the first week of school," said teacher Bonda Hoppe. "We are already ready and I know where they are and we can hit the day, the first day going."

Promotion Day is also designed to help out parents.

"They're worried who their child will be in class with, what teacher they're going to have," said Principal Kristi Shofner. "And I think it's just a real comfortable transition."

The concept led to a big question. What will be done for the graduating fifth graders?

"There's a lot of things in this last 10 or 11 days that are truly going to beneficial in their lives," Shofner said.

Life lessons, including patriotism and healthy eating choices are taught to the pre-teens.

A smooth transition into growing up is what Raguet Elementary is after.
