ISLA VISTA, CA (RNN/CNN) – The sheriff of the town where a mass shooting resulted in the death of seven people confirmed the identity of the shooter Saturday night.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the man was 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, a student of Santa Barbara City College who was a resident of Isla Vista, CA.

Six victims were killed Friday night around 9:30 p.m., and several more were wounded. It appeared Rodger turned the gun on himself after the shooting spree, Brown said.

Rodger first stabbed three men to death inside his apartment and later shot two women outside a sorority house. Then he traveled to a deli near the University of California-Santa Barbara. From his black BMW, he sprayed bullets into a deli and killed one more person.

"You don't think that it will happen to your child until it does," said Richard Martinez, the father of victim Chris Martinez. "Chris was a really great kid. Ask anyone who knew him."

The shooter is the son of Hunger Games assistant director Peter Rodger. Through an attorney, Rodger earlier stated his belief that his son was the shooter.

Brown called the attack a "premeditated mass murder." He said there were 12 crime scenes at 10 different locations.

Police obtained three handguns in their investigation, all purchased legally. There were more than 400 rounds of ammunition that had not been used.

While searching for a motive, investigators looked into a social media post from Rodger that appeared to be a manifesto.

"In reading this 141-page rambling autobiographical - almost a combination of an autobiography and a diary - it's very apparent of the severe extent of how disturbed Mr. Rodger was," Brown said. "He had been and was continuing be seen by a variety of different healthcare professionals."
