LUFKIN, TX (AP) - Lufkin ISD officials are saying they experienced a decent turnout for school on Monday. Event though Monday was a holiday, the district was forced to use the day as a make up day for a day they missed earlier in the year due to snow.
The district said that attendance for the entire district was right above 82%.
"We were able to utilize the day as a learning opportunity and even teach our students the meaning of the holiday," said Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Lynn Torres.
Many campuses encouraged students to wear red, white and blue as a way to honor the Holiday. Campuses across the district also talked to students to explain the purpose of the holiday.
Next year, the district does not see this being an issue.
"the calendar for the 2014-2015 school year was recently approved by the school board, and the bad weather days for next year are April 3 and June 1," said Director of Communications Sheila Adams.
