CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) - Prior to his indictment by a Houston County grand jury last week, a Crockett man accepted a plea bargain deal of 20 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
Diquan Kortese Chatman accepted the plea bargain deal on May 21, according to Elizabeth McCoy, a court clerk for Houston County. Chatman also had a prior grand jury indictment for aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to Houston County District Attorney Donna Kaspar. She said the victim in that case was a 9-year-old boy.
Kaspar said Chatman pleaded guilty to both charges as part of the plea bargain.
According to an arrest affidavit, the girl told her father that Chatman had forced himself on her and had sex with her. The father then reported the crime to the Freestone County Sheriff's Office, who forwarded the report on to the Crockett Police Department.
A previous East Texas News story stated that Crockett Police officers interviewed Chatman on March 4, and he allegedly admitted to have sex with the girl.
A warrant was obtained on March 10, and Chatman was arrested and booked into the Houston County Jail later that day.
