ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A 79-year-old Alto woman who was injured in a fiery two-vehicle wreck on US 69 north of Lufkin on May 29 has died.

Trooper David Hendry, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, confirmed that Ethel Lee Simmons died at East Texas Medical Center-Tyler on May 31. Simmons was airlifted to ETMC-Tyler following the accident.

DPS Trooper Marc Slocum said in a previous East Texas News story that Simmons was driving a PT Cruiser when she turned left off of FM 2021 and into the path of an 18-wheeler driven by Richard G. Jenson, 48, of Alamogordo, New Mexico, at 12:15 p.m.

Slocum said at least one Good Samaritan got Simmons out of the car before emergency personnel arrived on the scene. The car erupted in flames and continued to burn until fire crews arrived, sending a plume of black smoke in the air.

Both the north and southbound lanes of traffic were blocked for a short period of time.
