Lufkin ISD kicks off summer reading program

Brandon, Garrett, and Dunbar elementary schools kicked off their summer reading program Wednesday. More than two dozen kids gathered at Jones Park for story time and a book exchange. The avid readers had over 200 books to choose from. The schools wrote a grant to the Scholastic book company and received $1,000, which was used to purchase over 700 books.  Dr. Elizabeth Walter, principal of Brandon Elementary said its vital for students to continue learning even while on summer vacation.

"The research shows when kids do not read in the summer their reading levels are lower when they return in the fall. So we are trying to encourage the reading all summer long," Walters said.

She added that the group meets every Wednesday and the gathering are open to all students not just those in Lufkin ISD. This is the first year for the "Reading in the Park" program.
