LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

The pot got a whole lot sweeter for Lufkin's Ambucs, an organization that provides therapeutic trikes to children with special needs. On Friday morning, the organization received a check for $8,947 from Sonic restaurants in Lufkin and Diboll.

On Saturday, the organization held a fundraiser at all Sonic locations in both areas. Supervisor Krispen Jones said they decided to donate 30 percent of the restaurant's profits, including the car hops' tips to the organization. However, she said they had no idea they would raise as much as they did.

"I think it's awesome. I mean, that was just unexpected. We knew we were probably going to get probably around five [thousand], but when it got up to the nine thousand dollar range, we were just in awe," Jones said.

Cindy Melvin, the president of the Lufkin Ambucs chapter, said with the money, she can purchase at least 10 new bikes. She says each bike costs about $800.

"You know, we made so many friends on Saturday with the carhops and vice versa, and they were jus ... they thanked us at the same time that we were thanking them. We just had a really great day," Melvin said.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
