WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, criticized President Barack Obama on Monday for trading five Taliban detainees for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

Cruz says the president put American lives in danger.

"Americans need to know how the Obama administration thinks it has made our nation safer by releasing these five dangerous terrorists. Until President Obama convinces the public that this swap was in our interests, prudence dictates that all further transfers should be off the table," Cruz said.

Obama has admitted there is "absolutely" a chance the five men could try to hurt Americans.

A Taliban leader told Time magazine that the deal was so good that they should make kidnapping other Americans like Bergdahl a priority.
