Two people rushed to East Texas hospitals after head-on collision on Lufkin's northeast loop

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A serious accident on Lufkin's northeast Loop 287 has sent two drivers to East Texas hospitals. Shortly around 9 p.m., a silver four-door Mazda 626 and a maroon 4x4 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck were involved in a head-on collision near the U.S. 59 construction site.

According to Dale Dodd, an officer with the Lufkin Police Department, the driver of the Mazda was traveling southbound in the northbound lane. He said the driver appeared to be confused from the construction.

The male driver of the Mazda has been transported via helicopter to an area hospital and the female driver of the Silverado was taken by ambulance to another hospital.

The identities of the drivers have not yet been released.

Traffic was at a crawl on both sides of the highway until shortly after 9:30 p.m. when the accident was cleared.
