HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Students from all over the state took to the Houston County gun range for a chance to move on to the state championship for the 4H shooting program.

Events being held at the two-day tournament include whiz-bang, skeet, and trap.

Organizers said the program helps introduce children to guns in a safe manner.

"It teaches them responsibility," said Houston County Program Director G.P. Shearer. "We teach them how to handle a gun and not be afraid of a shotgun and now they are more confident with a gun and disciplined."

Friday saw almost 80 students participate. Organizers expect 60 competitors to compete on Saturday.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
