East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging raises elder abuse awareness

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Every year, one in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation.

The East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging is hoping to spread awareness of elder abuse.

The agency will kick off their awareness campaign today to educate the community on this silent problem.

According to the National Council on Aging, nearly five million older Americans are abused every year. The annual loss by victims of financial abuse is at least $2.6 billion dollars.

Elder abuse robs seniors of their dignity, security, and in some cases, costs them their lives.

The signs of elder abuse vary and one sign does not necessarily indicate abuse.

However, here are several signs to look for:
  •      Bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions and burns.
  •      Unexplained withdrawal from normal activities.
  •      A sudden change in alertness or unusual depression.
  •      Behaviors such as belittling, threats and other uses of control by a caregiver, including a      relative or spouse.
