A dolphin that had become a common and popular sight in a Slidell canal was found dead over the weekend, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
The carcass was removed Sunday from the canal near Lakeshore Estates.
Residents said they became worried when they hadn't seen the animal in several days. Wildlife and Fisheries said recent heavy rain diluted the canal salinity, causing the animal to become sick.
Too much fresh water can cause skin lesions on dolphins, and prolonged exposure can result in death.
The rogue dolphin had been in the canal since 2005, but started to become aggressive a couple of years ago.
One woman suffered an injury to her hand that required a trip to the hospital.
