ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

If you have been experiencing stinky and bad tasting water in Anderson County, the Anderson Regional Joint Water System says there is nothing to worry about.

In a press release, the company said they are experiencing a "seasonal taste and odor episode" with the water from Lake Hartwell due to an increase in a certain type of algae in the water. But they say it poses no heath risk.

The treatment process they use meets all health standards, but isn't very effective against the smell creating compounds, they said.

They said they are in the process of constructing additional treatment processes that should fix the taste and smell problems.

Here is the full release:

Anderson Regional Joint Water System is experiencing a seasonal taste and odor episode with its Lake Hartwell raw water source. Recent years' events have disturbed the normally very stable Hartwell Reservoir upon which we rely for our drinking water supplies. The result is an increase in constituents that cause a noticeable earthy taste and odor. Our existing treatment processes produce water that meets all health standards, but is less effective against these naturally occurring taste and odor causing compounds. These compounds pose no health issues as the water supplied continues to meet every state and federal primary drinking water standard for health and safety.

Anderson Regional Water is in the process of constructing additional treatment processes that should alleviate the taste and odor issues. We are anticipating the start-up of these new enhanced treatment processes and resolution of the issue within the next 2 weeks. Anderson Regional Water remains committed to providing safe affordable water to our community. We apologize for any inconvenience.
