Shelby County teachers to receive bonus

SHELBY COUNTY, TN -
(WMC) - Good news for Shelby County School teachers: bonuses are on the way.

The school board learned during a work session on Tuesday night that retention/performance raises will be awarded. The extra cash is in lieu of step raises, which were cut.

Teachers with the highest performance scores will get $1,250, while those with the lowest scores get $250.

"I know I heard Ms. Jones tell you time and time again they need to get something, you know, you guess what that something is, but our teachers have worked really hard," said Shelby County Schools Board Chairman Kevin Woods.

The district will also pick up an additional 3 percent of health care premium costs next year based, in part, on the results of an employee benefit survey.
