SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV/CNN) - Firefighters in San Diego got a little help from a TV news crew after a kitten became trapped in the engine of a taxi cab.

The kitten is safe and sound now after taking a dangerous ride under the hood of a taxi.

"[I] opened the hood and there's a little kitty over there," said the taxi driver.

The driver didn't even know the cat was there until he stopped to drop off a fare.

"I heard the noise, but thought maybe it was, you know, it was the radio, so I turned the radio off," the driver said.

For hours, crews tried to set the cat free. They used lights from the TV crews cameras to get a closer look and even used their tripod to prop open the hood.

Eventually, rescuers got a firm grip on the little cat through th wheel well.

"A little battle of wills, we were able to go ahead and extricate him out of there," said Lt. Kalani Hudson, with the Department of Animal Services.

Despite the long night in the engine compartment, animal services workers say the kitten doesn't have a thing wrong with him. Chances are, though, he won't be too excited to hop back into the car for the ride home.
