Now You See It: Jersey Shore guests thrilled by humpback whale sightings

Posted: Updated:

A father and daughter from Manalapan now have a whale of a story off of Lavallette with this video to prove it

Howie and Paige Allen didn't catch any striped bass as they fished off their kayak -- but they did catch a rare view of this humpback whale from just ten feet away.

"He was so close to us we could literally see his blow hole, his spine, and everything."

The video shows one breaching Monday off Loch Arbour. A mate on the Miss Belmar Princess party boat says its been a feast for the eyes almost daily along the Jersey shore.

"Anywhere you see bunker, bunker schools for the most part, it's been like Long Branch area, for the most part, and they've been pretty tight to the beaches also this year."

Further south off Island Beach State Park, a fisherman from Lacey captured this video of another humpback whale. He tells us it circled near them for about one hour.

As for the Allens -- the whale they stumbled upon left them with an experience they won't soon forget and that includes the scent after it spouted.

"It smelled like chopped up like herring or bunker which is an oily fish so all that moisture in the air you get covered in it. It's not really appealing but it was definitely something special."

NOAA is reporting that more whales have been struck by ships.

Boaters are being reminded it's the law to stay one-thousand feet from them or face steep fines.
