LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - An East Texan is helping fulfill the dying wish of an elderly woman who is in hospice care. The wish is not for herself but for six puppies and their mom who found their way to her home after being abandoned and left to fend for themselves down a farm-to-market road.
Sadly, animals are often abandoned by their owners. They are left down county roads or in parking lots alone.
The story for these six German shepherd-mix puppies is no different except that an elderly woman's last request is that they all find homes.
Yana Ogletree is helping find the puppies homes.
"The puppies had ended up at a home of a woman, an elderly woman, who is on hospice care," Ogletree said. "She told me, 'Oh, those puppies are fine. I enjoy watching those puppies. They bring a smile to my face and they're so fun to watch.'"
Ogletree is an animal lover who saw the puppies and stopped to offer her help.
"It's amazing how God brings people together in the most unusual circumstances. I don't know this woman. I don't know her name. I don't know anything about her life," Ogletree said.
So when she learned how much it would mean to this woman that the puppies that had brought her so much joy and distracted her from her health issues find their way home, she was determined to make it happen.
"It's my mission to get these puppies adopted out, and like I said, I felt compelled that I needed to honor her wish, but at the same time, if anybody knows me I'm a huge animal lover," Ogletree said.
The puppies' mother has found a home here in Lufkin. Two of the puppies have already been adopted into loving homes. Brother and sister, Jack and Jill, are at Winnie Berry Humane Society and the two others looking for permanent homes are with Ogletree.
"This is unique and more urgent because time is of the essence, you know? It's odd when you think about this women who is on hospice care and is dying and then you think about the animals in the shelter and that time is of the essence for them as well," Ogletree said.
Ogletree says she hopes East Texans will open up their homes and hearts and give these puppies and this woman their wish.
