CENTER, TX (KTRE) -

A Center couple is quite shaken up after a bizarre assault at their home over the weekend. The husband and wife said they were attacked by a man wearing a devil mask Saturday morning.

According to a Center Crime Stoppers press release, the suspect is described as a black male, approximately six feet in height who was wearing all black clothing with a Halloween costume mask. The mask is described as dark in color with two horns, 1 ½ to 2 inches long with "crazy teeth," the press release said.

The incident happened around 6 a.m. at a residence in the 1000 block of Nacogdoches Street in Center. The homeowners, Janice and Billy Don Hughes, said the attack was "traumatizing."

Every morning, Janice Hughes wakes up and sits out on the porch, she said. But for some reason, her routine was a little different this past Saturday.

"This particular morning, I was running a little late, and it just so happened [Billy Don] stepped out on the porch ahead of me. When he stepped out on the porch, a devil jumped up on the porch," said Janice Hughes. "I could see something big and tall with a Halloween costume, and I'm thinking ‘what is that?'"

"So I get closer to the door and I look out, and he's having a confrontation with Billy Don, and I jerk the door open. When I get the door open, I look down, and I see he had a pistol, and I thought, 'Oh, we are in trouble,'" Janice Hughes said.

Billy Don Hughes said as soon as the masked assailant jumped on the front porch, his protective instincts kicked in.

"He bent over and started telling me to be quiet. He was looking at Janice in the house, and I said ‘I'm fixing to shoot you,' no weapon or nothing. And he said, ‘You going to shoot me'?" Billy Don Hughes said.

Right then, Billy Don Hughes realized the man had a pistol. Closing the door quickly, Janice Hughes ran into the living room when the masked assailant kicked open the door with his foot, and held her by gunpoint, she said.

"And I was screaming ‘Oh, God. Oh, God. Please, no. Don't shoot me. Please, God. No, don't,'" Janice Hughes said. "About that time, Billy Don had approached him from the back and when Billy Don approached him, he swung around and hit Billy Don on the face with the pistol and held him with the pistol between his eyes. At that split second, I flew down the hall. It was just that one split second that Billy Don gave me the opportunity to flee."

Janice ran down the hallway and out the front door. She said she ran down the street and hid at a neighbor's house while her husband Billy Don dealt with the devil mask assailant. Billy Don Hughes said as soon as his wife ran off, the masked assailant ran out the back door and around the house.

Janice Hughes said she believes the man knew her routine and was out to get her, she said. She said he had probably been watching her for weeks from the woods, and Billy Don Hughes said he is thankful to be alive.

"When the devil jumped on our back porch, God was looking down and saying ‘This is two of my people.' And he put angels down to protect us," Billy Don Hughes said.

Some of Billy Don Hughes' teeth were knocked out by the alleged assault, and he said he isn't sure if he and Janice will continue to live at their home. He did admit that he is too scared to sleep at his home at night.

Center Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect. Anyone with information is urged to contact 936-598-SAFE936-598-SAFE (7233), or submit a tip online at www.centercrimestoppers.com.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable.
