HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) - Dean McMullen and his wife bowed out of the restaurant business four years ago, but today you'll find them back in the kitchen at Huntington Meat Market.
McMullen said he had to buy the restaurant back because it was too good a place to let go, but there was a lot of work to do before they could open re-open the doors.
Dean was greeting his guests at Huntington Meat Market and Deli when the doors opened.
"This is our first day back and we're happy to be here," McMullen said.
It's been four years since he owned this place.
"Well I guess I'm crazy. I had to buy it back. It was too good to let it go," McMullen said.
However, it wasn't an easy road to re-opening. McMullen says he spent 12-hour days cleaning every corner from top to bottom.
"I had a lot of work to do, and we did it," McMullen said. "It took 16 days and seven people to clean it up."
Now McMullen and his wife are cooking up the Southern favorites they say their customers love.
"Same recipes that I had before, same seasonings I had before. Everything is done exactly the same way," McMullen said.
So what's McMullen's secret to good home cookin'?
"Well I put seasoning on my food, bacon grease, bell pepper, garlic, onion and cheese," McMullen said.
Customer Warren Taylor said what makes McMullen's food good is "attention to what they're doing and they do a good job at what they do."
Warren Taylor didn't even need words to describe the first bite of his meat loaf.
Huntington Meat Market serves six meats and tons of vegetables, all fresh and home-cooked, every day. Plus, McMullen added a hand-carved barbeque station, and you can't forget the mile-high pie.
