NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office have arrested a Lufkin couple accused of trafficking meth and concealing it inside their three-year-old child's toy.
Rene Tamez, 44, and Anna Maria Tamez, 38, are each charged with second-degree possession of a controlled substance and state-jail felony endangering a child.
According to Sheriff Jason Bridges, deputies stopped a car for a traffic violation on US 59. Bridges said deputies observed an odor of marijuana coming from the car and Rene Tamez told them it had been smoked inside the car.
Deputies also noticed the child was sitting in the back seat without a seatbelt, Bridges said.
After the couple appeared nervous and gave conflicting statements about their trip to Nacogdoches, Bridges said deputies were able to get consent to search the vehicle and found 87 grams of meth near the child and concealed inside a toy.
Rene Tamez is on parole and has been served with a warrant to revoke it.
The child has been turned over to CPS custody and Bridges said he believes the drugs were being transported to Nacogdoches County to be distributed on the streets.
