LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police have arrested a suspect they said made a false report of a shooting near Angelina College in an attempt to elude capture.
Devonte Turner, 22, is being charged with burglary of a habitation and failure to identify a fugitive.
Sgt. David Casper said that at approximately 7:45 a.m., on Monday, the department received a report of someone firing a gun near the campus.
"The caller, later identified as Turner, stated that they witnessed three males, one of which had a gun, shoot at a vehicle near the college," Casper said. "The caller went on to say that the subjects then fled on foot through the campus. Officers responded to the location and spoke with multiple people in the area. No one reported hearing or seeing anything suspicious."
Casper said officers continued to follow up on the report and were able to determine that the call was made by a suspect in another case. Officers were attempting to apprehend the subject who was in a nearby apartment complex when the 911 call was made. Officers believe that Turner made the false report in an attempt to have the officers respond to the area of Angelina College so that he could elude capture.
"Officers of the Lufkin Police Department were investigating a burglary report and were waiting to get a search warrant signed for an apartment where they believed the suspect was hiding," Casper said. "The report of the shots fired came in while officers were waiting on the search warrant."
Casper said that a possible false report charge could be filed, pending further investigation.
