Mobile crime cameras popping up in ‘hot spot’ neighborhoods

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Chances are you have seen one of the mobile crime cameras around Toledo, but how can you get one in your neighborhood?

Toledo Police say the cameras are set up for special events, placed in neighborhoods where they're requested, or where there is a lot of crime. One camera has been set up at Airport Highway and South Avenue for the past week.

"We had a few incidents around that area and some neighbors have been asking us to put one there," explained TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Nadia Paradiso is the manager at Bambino's Pizza across the street from the camera, and she says she's thankful it's there.

"It definitely makes us feel safer inside here with that out there," she said.

The mobile cameras are monitored by officers and give them a constant look at what's going on in a neighborhood.

"If we have hot spots that flare up in certain areas, be it juvenile crime or problems locally, we'll put these cameras up and they have a good impact on eliminating crime or deterring criminals around the area," Sgt. Heffernan said.

Police say they are happy to take suggestions from Toledo residents on where a camera should go next. If you're concerned about crime in a certain part of town, send Toledo Police a message on Facebook, tell your local block watch, or give police a call.
