Broad back open after explosion closes road between 4th and 7th

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Broad Street in downtown Richmond is back open after a manhole near 5th and Broad exploded Wednesday night.

The road was closed in both directions between 4th and 7th streets, as Richmond fire crews, the city's Department of Public Works and Dominion Power officials inspected the scene.

According to Dominion Power, it's due to a failed cable wire. Richmond Police say it affected four to five manhole covers, but only one actually exploded. Dominion was on the scene through the night repairing the damage.

This all happened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Part of Broad Street was shut down while workers repaired the underground damage. Crews replaced a number of feet of cable while on the scene.

The good news is no one was hurt, and there were no power outages. Dominion does not anticipate this being a continued problem.
