Harbor Village Florida comments on on a study that reduces relapses from heroin.

USA (PRWEB) July 03, 2014

Patients that begin treatment for heroin and opioid addiction during hospitalization that also receive outpatient treatment (medical and psychiatric) are 5x less likely to relapse, according to a recent report Treating Addicted Patients During, After Hospitalization Reduces Relapse (6/30). According to the report, the average bill for opioid and heroin-related treatment in 2013 was almost $19,000 per a visit - a number that continues to skyrocket. The new research, a collaboration between BMC (Boston Medical Center) and BHRI (Butlet Hospital of Rhode Island), has shown that there is a compassionate and cost-effective way of combating this problem: simple treatment.

By focusing emergency treatment and interventions in a clinical setting, the patients are set up for success - but support has to continue once they leave the hospital. With regular outpatient therapy (both pharmaceutical and group/talk therapy), patients have a 5x reduction in relapse after they leave the hospital.

Most opioid-addiction treatments are aimed at detoxing and easing the symptoms of physical withdrawal; while physical withdrawal can be a major cause of relapse, theres also a psychological component that needs to be taken into consideration.

The study followed 139 patients who had been initially hospitalized with an opioid addiction (with informed consent) over a three year period. Both groups received Buprenorphine, but only half received referrals to a primary care addiction outpatient program. 10% of the standard treatment program group reported 0% opioid use after 6 months of treatment. The alternate treatment program, though, had 30% of the group reporting 0% opioid use after 6 months of treatment.
