LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - T
he Lufkin Police Department is searching for an East Texas man they say used 47 different stolen credit cards to buy more than $5,000 in gasoline.
The alleged fraudulent charges were made at the Chevron on the corner of John Reddit Dr. and Old Union Rd. in Lufkin on July 10th.
LPD is classifying the charges as suspicious because of how many different cards were used.
"47 different ones, I would say that is a little suspicious," said Lufkin Police Lt. Mike Shurley.
The gas station manager said she knew something was wrong when she saw a maroon Ford pickup, with a large gas container on the back, parked at a pump for more than an hour.
She said she looked at the transactions and saw that the customer had bought $125 worth of diesel gas 41 times with 41 different cards.
"There are instances where people will take advantage of stolen credit cards at a gas pump because there is no one there checking the license," Shurley said.
However, that wasn't the only time the suspicious transactions were made. The gas station manager said the very next day a green Ford pickup, with the same type of gas container on the back, went to the pump and purchased $125 worth of diesel gas 6 times with 6 different credit cards.
"There may be 47 people who don't know their identity has been stolen. A lot of times they don't know there is a problem until after there is a problem," Shurley said.
Shurley said that's why it's always important to double check your personal information.
"That's why it's important for people to run credit checks on themselves periodically to make sure that there is nothing on there that shouldn't be on there," Shurley said.
The case is under investigation and LPD is urging anyone with information about this case to contact Lufkin Crime Stoppers at (936) 639-8477.
