UIL moves boys and girls basketball state tournaments to San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX (KTRE) -

After much debate, the University Interscholastic League announced Tuesday that the boys and girls state basketball tournaments to now be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio for the 2015 championships.

One of the biggest factors in making the change was when schools had issues finding hotels in Austin during South By Southwest along with other events being held in the same area, at the same time, in March.

The UIL said that some schools in this year’s state tournament had no choice but to stay as far as 50 miles away from the Frank Erwin Center.

The state tournaments have been held at the Frank Erwin Center on The University of Texas at Austin campus since 1978.

The traffic in the Austin area has had a direct impact not only on the schools, but also on the fans.

Attendance numbers have gone down throughout the years. ETSN.fm reports that for this year’s boys games, the average attendance rate was around 10,000 for each game. In year’s before, the average was as high as 14,000.

The girls state tournament is scheduled for March 5-7, 2015, and the boys is scheduled for March 12-14, 2015.
