LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police officers arrested a 32-year-old man Wednesday on a laundry list of charges after he allegedly got into a violent physical domestic disturbance with a woman while he was holding his baby girl in his arms.
Justin Ellis Dodd, 32, of Lufkin, is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a second-degree felony charge of possession of a controlled substance less than 1 gram, a state-jail felony abandoning or endangering a child-criminal negligence charge, a state-jail felony criminal no-support charge, a Class A misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury charge, a Class C misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia charge, and two misdemeanor traffic charges.
Collectively, Dodd’s bail has been set at $4,500 on all but two of the charges.
According to the arrest affidavit, Lufkin Police officers were dispatched out to the 700 block of Kiln Street at approximately 7:47 p.m. Wednesday in reference to disturbance in progress. When the first LPD officer arrived on the scene, he noticed several people standing in the street.
A few blocks down, he saw Dodd holding a baby in his left arm.
“Dodd was extremely upset and agitated,” the affidavit stated.
The officer also noticed a small cut on Dodd’s right arm that was bleeding. With the help of an Angelina County constable, the LPD officer managed to get Dodd to sit on the curb to keep the child as safe as possible.
After the officers took the baby away from Dodd, they detained him while they investigated what had happened, the affidavit stated.
When the LPD officer talked to the child’s mother, she told the baby was on a bed in their residence when she and Dodd got into a verbal argument. She told the officer that Dodd became aggressive and snatched the baby up off the bed.
According to the affidavit, the baby’s mother tried to take her child away from Dodd, and he started punching her in the face and head while he was still holding the baby. Then Dodd went to leave the residence. At that point, the woman grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself from Dodd, the affidavit stated.
Dodd allegedly continued to hit the woman in the head and face after he left the home. The woman told police that she didn’t make any aggressive moves with the knife.
The LPD officer that talked to the woman noticed a cut on her lip and blood in her mouth. He also noticed redness on her face that was consistent with being punched.
Several witnesses at the scene backed up the woman’s version of what happened, according to the affidavit.
According to a previous East Texas News story, Lufkin Police officers went to serve an arrest warrant on Dodd at his residence back in January and they allegedly found methampethamine, K2, cocaine, Ecstasy, and Xanax in the residence.
Dodd's arrest record dates back to July 2001. He has been arrested on a variety of charges, including assault causing bodily injury, possession of a controlled substance, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
