NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A plumber driving through the area managed to help salvage a Nacogdoches house from being destroyed from fire Friday morning.
Gustovo Ortiz said he was driving down Terracewood Drive when he saw flames coming out of the house. He said he called 911 and began helping to put out the fire before firefighters arrived.
"I went to see if someone was in the house and if I could help," Ortiz said. "I do plumbing, and I checked the gas because I see a lot of flames. I was going to turn off the gas."
Fire Chief Keith Kipplinger said reports came in that people were locked inside the house, so firefighters went into rescue mode. However, they were able to determine that nobody was inside the house.
The house suffered damage to 30 percent of it.
The homeowner, Wing Lam, said he had left the house to run some errands. When he returned, he saw it was engulfed in flames. He said he did have insurance on the home.
"I went to pick up some figs," Lam said." When, I came back, it was just like that."
Battalion chief Terry Westmorlans said the cause of the fire was electrical, but they are still trying to determine the exact source.
