CENTER, TX (KTRE) - When he's not fighting crime as a police officer in Center, he's following his passion as a country music songwriter. On Saturday, Stephen Stroud was signed to a major Nashville record label and will now be songwriting with some of the names behind the number one hits of George Strait and Tim McGraw.
"Everything in life is a song just waiting to be written," Stroud said. "I've been in music since I was a kid - playing in different bands, country bands, and writing since I was little, just putting something together."
The 38-year-old was signed to Mike and Joe Entertainment, a Nashville record label that is merged with Warner Music Nashville, a record company that represents acts like Blake Shelton and Faith Hill.
"I was very excited. I've been working for a long time and it takes a lot to get recognized as a serious songwriter," Stroud said.
For years, Stroud has been patrolling the streets of Center as a police officer while struggling to catch his big break as a musician.
"I started working out of Nashville, going back and forth, and I just got right back into writing songs and performing as well with our band Ashton Hill," Stroud said.
Despite lending his vocals to his down home band, Ashton Hill, Stroud said his new gig is strictly songwriting.
"It's a great feeling. I mean, that's what you want; seeking for that big cut, that big cut. I love to hear other people play my music," Stroud said.
He says he'll work a lot with Mark Nesler, the songwriter for Tim McGraw and George Strait.
"Things are really looking up, you know? Got a good family behind me, a good wife, and good friends that back me," Stroud said.
Despite the big dreams coming true for the small town police officer, Stroud said he won't plan on quitting the police department just yet. He said he loves his job and will commute back and forth. That is, until he gets a number one hit.
