Henrico 16-year-old killed in Michigan boating accident

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Memorials are being planned for a Henrico High School student killed in a boating accident over the weekend.  Friends of Caroline Knotts say she was on vacation with her family in Michigan when it happened.

According to her obituary, Knotts, 16, played varsity soccer and field hockey at Henrico High. She was also part of the International Baccalaureate program.

The photos show a teenager who had so much going for her, but Knotts' friends say it was her kind heart that made her stand out.  "No matter what, she always had a smile and she was always laughing which was really good," Knotts' friend and neighbor Bobby Morin said.

Her life was cut short just five days after her 16th birthday. Friends say she was vacationing with her family in Iosco County, Michigan when she was killed.  The sheriff's office has not released Knotts' identity, but multiple friends and neighbors have confirmed it.  According to the sheriff's office, the accident happened on Jose Lake on Friday.  Deputies say the teenager was riding on an inner tube being pulled by a boat. They say the tube hit an anchored swimming platform.  Knotts died from her injuries.

"It's a good time but it does have its dangers," Chesterfield Fire and EMS Lt. Jason Elmore said..  Elmore says extra safety precautions must be taken while tubing.  "Before you go out, you want to make sure you communicate between the tuber and the driver, maybe some hand signals so that if somebody does get into distress there's a certain hand signal that the tuber and the driver can communicate," he said.

"We all loved her and we're all going to miss her," Morin said.  In the Knotts' West End neighborhood, many people are just learning about the accident and are leaving flowers at the home.  Friends took to social media to share their grief using the Twitter hashtag #alwaysCLK. Celine Gil said Knotts was "the sunshine of the friendship ... always smiling, laughing and making everyone else feel better."

The Iosco County Sheriff says his deputies are still investigating the circumstances around this accident.   A 55-year-old woman was driving the boat.  At this time, investigators aren't saying just how the two are related.

A memorial is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, August 7 at Christ Church, 5000 Pouncey Tract Road in Glen Allen. The time of the memorial may change, however.
