LUFKIN, TX (News Release) -

Lufkin Police Department (LPD) officers are currently investigating reports of gun shots in the area of East Laurel Avenue and North Warren Street.

The initial report came from a residence on East Laurel Avenue and the complainant reported that an unidentified male suspect was firing an undescribed firearm toward a residence. At this time, LPD has not received any reports of injury or damage related to that report.

A second report came from the 700 block of North Warren Street and the complainant reported that an unidentified male suspect was firing an undescribed firearm from a "flashy car" with a tire on the back.

At this time, LPD officers have not confirmed that shots were, or were not, fired but made contact with a homeowner who reported that the residence was burglarized and that he chased the burglar into a wooded area off North Warren Avenue.

The homeowner described the suspect as a black male, 5’08” to 5’09” tall, slim build, wearing a blue shirt and dark shorts with white stripes, and carrying a red or orange drawstring bag.

The area currently being searched by LPD officers is bordered by North Warren Street, Hoskins Avenue, Trenton Street, and Atkinson Drive.

At this time, none of “shots fired” reports have been confirmed and no property damage or injuries have been reported.

Additional information will be released when such becomes available.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
